Panama Climate by Region: Highlands, Coasts, and Islands Compared

Panama's two-coast geography plus a continuous cordillera produces a half-dozen distinct regional climates. A coffee farm in the Chiriquí highlands sees one set of conditions; a subsistence fisher on a Guna Yala atoll sees something quite different; a cattle rancher in the Azuero *Arco Seco* lives with a third. This page is a region-by-region reference (Caribbean coast, Pacific lowlands, Azuero, central provinces, Chiriquí highlands, the eastern cordillera, and the offshore islands), covering temperature, rainfall, dry-season length, and the human activities each climate supports. Use it to plan a trip, choose where to farm, or sanity-check a 'when to visit' question.

How Panama splits by climate region

The official national water-management plan, ANAM’s Plan Nacional de Gestión Integrada de Recursos Hídricos (GIRH) 2010–2030, divides the country into two vertientes (watersheds): the Caribbean vertiente in the north, which covers 30 % of national territory and holds 18 hydrographic basins with 150 rivers and a mean river length of 56 km; and the Pacific vertiente in the south, which covers 70 % of the territory and holds 34 basins with 350 rivers and a mean river length of 106 km[2]. Precipitation reflects the same split: the Caribbean vertiente averages around 3,500 mm/year; the Pacific vertiente averages markedly less, with the Arco Seco bottoming out below 1,500 mm/year[2].

That’s the structural starting point. From here, six regional climate zones are useful to a reader trying to plan a trip, a farm, or a piece of research:

  1. Caribbean lowlands and coast: perhumid rainforest, rain year-round.
  2. Pacific lowlands and the Arco Seco: seasonal tropical wet-and-dry.
  3. The central provinces (Coclé, Herrera, Los Santos, Veraguas): transitional, mostly Pacific-side seasonality.
  4. Chiriquí highlands and Volcán Barú: cool, misty, coffee-and-vegetable country.
  5. Eastern Panama and Darién: hot, wet, with a Caribbean flavour on the north coast and a Pacific flavour on the south.
  6. Offshore islands: split by which vertiente they sit in.

The Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute’s national stations layer (operated jointly by ETESA, ACP, and STRI) is the canonical reference for current station-by-station values across all six zones[1].

1. Caribbean coast and lowlands

The Caribbean side runs roughly from the Costa Rican border in the west (Bocas del Toro Province) through Veraguas Norte, Colón, and Panamá Province’s north shore into the Guna Yala archipelago on the east. Mean temperatures sit around 26–27 °C year-round; the diurnal range is small (about 7–9 °C). Annual rainfall commonly lands between 3,000 and 5,000 mm at lowland stations, with ridge stations in the central cordillera exceeding 5,000 mm[1].

There is no true dry season. A short relative lull from February through April reduces rain frequency but not total; monthly totals rarely fall below 100 mm even at the driest stations. Tropical waves and trade-wind surges drive the wet-season peaks in May–July and again in October–December.

Land use is overwhelmingly forest and small-scale subsistence farming (cocoa, plantain, root crops). The Bocas del Toro archipelago on the west end is the most-visited part of the Caribbean coast; the Guna Yala archipelago in the east is a comarca under Indigenous self-governance. Both are humid enough that travel outside the December–March window is a serious undertaking.

2. Pacific lowlands and the Arco Seco

The Pacific lowlands span everything south of the cordillera: from Burica and the western Chiriquí coast, around the Gulf of Chiriquí (Coiba Island offshore), through the Azuero Peninsula, the Gulf of Panama, and east to the Gulf of San Miguel and the Darién coast. Temperatures run a touch hotter than the Caribbean side (27–28 °C mean, occasionally 33–35 °C on the hottest afternoons), and the rainfall regime is sharply seasonal.

The defining sub-region is the Arco Seco, the dry arc that runs from southern Veraguas through Coclé, Herrera, and Los Santos. Annual rainfall drops below 1,500 mm; in some years Herrera’s central stations record under 1,200 mm[1]. The dry season from mid-December to mid-April delivers less than 10 % of the annual total and is reliable enough that cattle ranching and dry-season rice have defined the local economy for centuries.

Outside the Arco Seco, the Pacific lowlands are wetter. The eastern Azuero coast, the coast around the Gulf of Panama, and the eastern Pacific Darién coast each receive 2,000–3,000 mm/year but with the same seasonal rhythm.

3. Central provinces (Coclé, Herrera, Los Santos, Veraguas)

These four provinces sit across the climatic transition. Their Pacific slopes are part of the Arco Seco; their Caribbean slopes pick up trade-wind moisture. The provincial capitals (Penonomé, Chitré, Las Tablas, Santiago) all sit on the Pacific side and share the Arco Seco’s seasonal cycle (dry December through April, wet May through November), but the cordillera crossings to the north are wet year-round.

Temperature and rainfall vary with elevation and exposure. Penonomé at 50 m is hot and dry; the road up into the Santa Fe highlands crosses into cloud forest within an hour. The region’s claim on Panama’s climate is the veranillo, the brief mid-summer dry interlude, and the dry-season sugar and melon harvests that depend on it.

4. Chiriquí highlands and Volcán Barú

The Chiriquí highlands run from the Costa Rican border east to the Fortuna valley and the Chiriquí Viejo river. The lowest point on the Pacific side is the Burica Peninsula at sea level; the highest is Volcán Barú at 3,475 m. Mean temperatures drop with elevation at about 0.6 °C per 100 m, giving a range from 27 °C at David to about 12–15 °C at the highest reaches of the Barú National Park.

Rainfall on the Pacific slope is moderate (1,800–2,500 mm/year at mid-elevation); on the Caribbean slope, the same ridge stations that sit in Arco Seco territory on the south receive 4,000+ mm/year. Boquete, at about 1,200 m on the eastern flank of Barú, has the country’s most temperate climate and is the centre of the high-altitude coffee and flower industry.

Cloud forest, a persistent mist ecosystem at the elevation where the cordillera traps Caribbean moisture, begins around 1,500–1,800 m on the windward side. Above 2,500 m, the vegetation shortens; the upper flanks of Volcán Barú are a sub-páramo of dwarf forest and grassland.

5. Eastern Panama and Darién

The eastern half of Panama (Panamá Province east of the Canal, Darién Province, and the comarcas Emberá-Wounaan and Wargandí) is hot, wet, and sparsely populated. The Caribbean-side climate (perhumid, rain year-round) dominates the north coast; the Pacific side (seasonal, Arco Seco-influenced but wetter than central Panama) dominates the Gulf of San Miguel and the Darién coast.

Annual rainfall runs 2,500–4,000 mm in most stations, with the highest totals on the Caribbean coast near the Colombian border. Temperature is uniformly warm (26–28 °C mean) below about 500 m. The Darién Gap is the only break in the Pan-American Highway; the road stops at Yaviza on the Pacific side and resumes in Colombia, with the roadless stretch running through Darién National Park and the Indigenous comarcas.

6. Offshore islands

The offshore islands fall into three groups by climate:

  • Caribbean islands (Bocas del Toro Archipelago, San Blas / Guna Yala Archipelago, the small islands off Colón). Perhumid, rain year-round, with the same trade-wind regime as the adjacent mainland.
  • Pacific islands (Pearl Islands, Coiba Island, Taboga, the Gulf of Chiriquí islands). Seasonal wet-and-dry, mirroring the Pacific mainland; Coiba is wetter than the mainland because its size generates orographic rain.
  • Special cases. The Pearl Islands get notably less rain than the adjacent mainland Azuero because they sit further offshore and miss the Arco Seco’s extreme dryness; Isla Contadora records about 1,500 mm/year. The Gulf of Chiriquí islands are the driest in the Pacific, sitting in a local rain shadow cast by the Burica Peninsula.

Microclimates within the regions

The six regional descriptions above are averages; within each region there are significant microclimates driven by local topography and exposure:

  • Boquete’s microclimate. The Boquete valley sits in a horseshoe of mountains that traps moisture on its eastern flank and creates a relatively dry zone on its western flank. The town’s annual rainfall is about 2,500 mm despite being on the Caribbean side of the cordillera; the same mountains that dry out Boquete also protect it from Atlantic storms.
  • The Azuero rain shadow. The central Azuero Peninsula (Herrera and western Los Santos) has the lowest rainfall in Panama because the cordillera casts a triple rain shadow: moisture falls on both the Caribbean and Pacific slopes of the cordillera, leaving the central Azuero under persistent descending air. The result is the Arco Seco’s characteristic desert-edge vegetation.
  • The Pacific-side bajareque belt. The upper Pacific slope of the cordillera (above 800 m) receives persistent mist and light rain through the May-November invierno. This is the bajareque zone, where coffee and vegetable cultivation depends on the moisture without the heavier convective storms of the lowlands.
  • The Caribbean-side veranillo. The Caribbean side does not have a true dry season, but a brief mid-summer (late July-August) drying trend in some years gives a partial veranillo. The effect is variable and not reliable for trip planning, but it can occasionally produce a few sunny days in what is otherwise a continuously wet period.

These microclimates mean that the regional averages can mislead by 20-30% in either direction for any specific location. The STRI/ETESA station layer is the canonical source for site-specific values.

When to skip and when to read on

If you’re deciding where in Panama to go, the regional rule of thumb is: Caribbean side for rain and rainforest, Pacific lowlands for sunshine and dry-season beach weather, Chiriquí highlands for temperate weather and coffee country, Arco Seco for cattle country and dry-season festivals, and Darién for primary rainforest and remoteness.
