What the Chiriquí highlands are
The Chiriquí highlands are the high-elevation region of western Chiriquí Province, anchored by Volcán Barú, Panama’s only stratovolcano and highest peak at 3,474 m[1], and surrounded by the Volcán Barú National Park, a 14,325 ha protected area[3] with a 2016 MiAmbiente public-use plan[2]. The highland region extends from the Barú foothills east into the Fortuna valley and the headwaters of the Río Chiriquí Viejo, and south into the highlands that drain into the Pacific through the towns of Concepción, Gualaca, and the Río Fonseca.
Three factors make this region distinct from the rest of Panama:
- Elevation. The highlands run from about 1,200 m at Boquete up to 3,474 m at the Barú summit. The high-elevation zone includes Volcán Barú, the Cerro Picacho massif to the east, and the headwaters of the Río Chiriquí.
- Climate. The highlands are cool by Panamanian standards. Boquete sits at about 1,200 m and has a year-round mean of 18–22 °C; the upper flanks of Barú drop below 10 °C at night in the dry season.
- Rainfall. The Caribbean-side slopes of the highland zone receive 3,000–5,000 mm/year, among the wettest in Panama, while the Pacific-side slopes at the same elevation receive 1,800–2,800 mm. This asymmetry is the basis of the coffee and vegetable industries.
Sub-regions
Boquete
Boquete sits in a steep valley on the eastern flank of Volcán Barú, at about 1,200 m elevation. It is the best-known highland town in Panama and the centre of the country’s high-altitude coffee industry. The annual average temperature is 18–22 °C, with overnight lows in the dry season occasionally dropping into the low teens. Annual rainfall is around 2,500–3,500 mm, with a relatively short dry season from January through March.
Boquete’s economy revolves around coffee production, soft fruits (berries, especially), and tourism. The town is the principal staging area for the dawn climb of Volcán Barú, and it has a well-developed infrastructure of licensed guides, lodging, and gear shops. The Sendero de los Quetzales, a highland trail between Boquete and Cerro Punta, is one of Panama’s best-known birding destinations and is reliably productive for resplendent quetzal from February through April.
Volcán and Cerro Punta
Volcán and Cerro Punta sit on the western flank of Barú, at the eastern edge of the Talamanca Range and along the Costa Rica border. Both towns sit at around 1,600–1,800 m and have a cooler, cloudier climate than Boquete. They are the centre of the highland vegetable industry, growing onions, potatoes, lettuce, carrots, and broccoli, supplying much of Panama’s domestic market as well as Costa Rica’s.
The Costa Rica border is just west of Cerro Punta, and the La Amistad International Park extends across the border. The park is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and protects one of the largest tracts of intact cloud forest in Central America.
David and the Pacific-side outlet
David, the capital of Chiriquí Province, sits at about 30 m elevation on the Pacific slope below the highlands. It is the principal commercial centre of the highland region and has the closest commercial airport to Boquete and Volcán. The drive from David to Boquete is about 45 minutes.
David is not itself a highland town, but its market and infrastructure support the highland economy. The Río Chiriquí, which drains much of the highland zone, passes through the David area on its way to the Pacific; the river has a series of hydroelectric installations that contribute meaningfully to Panama’s electricity supply.
Fortuna and the eastern highlands
The eastern Chiriquí highlands extend from the Barú massif east into the Fortuna valley and the headwaters of the Río Chiriquí Viejo. The Fortuna area is dominated by the Fortuna hydroelectric reservoir (a major source of Panama’s electricity) and the adjacent Río Chiriquí watershed. Vegetation is lower-montane rainforest with some higher-elevation cloud forest on the steepest slopes.
The eastern highlands are less-visited than Boquete or Volcán but support important birding habitat, including several highland endemics and the largest remaining populations of the yellow-thighed finch.
Climate of the Chiriquí highlands
The highlands have a sharp three-band climate:
- 1,000–1,500 m. Mean temperature 18–22 °C; rainfall 2,500–3,500 mm/year; dry season February through March. This is the coffee belt.
- 1,500–2,500 m. Mean temperature 14–18 °C; rainfall 3,000–5,000 mm/year on windward (Caribbean) slopes and somewhat less on leeward (Pacific) slopes; cloud forest begins. This is the upper coffee and vegetable belt.
- Above 2,500 m. Mean temperature below 14 °C; rainfall 3,000–5,000 mm/year; cloud forest transitions to dwarf forest and páramo above 3,000 m.
The dry season at all elevations runs from January through March, with February as the driest month. The bajareque (the heavy-mist, light-rain pattern) is most pronounced in May through August. The veranillo (mid-summer dry interlude, July) is the critical ripening window for the coffee harvest.
Why the highland coffee is what it is
Coffee in the Chiriquí highlands is grown at 1,200–1,800 m, in the climate band where:
- Daytime temperatures in the growing season are 18–22 °C, cool enough that the coffee cherries mature slowly and develop complex sugars.
- Night-time temperatures drop into the low teens during the dry season, further slowing the ripening and improving cup quality.
- The Cordillera Central’s Caribbean slope provides year-round moisture via the trade winds, and the leeward (Pacific slope) provides the dry-season stress that the coffee cherries need.
- Volcanic soils on the Barú flanks provide potassium and minerals that produce a dense, flavourful bean.
The result is one of the most distinctive specialty-coffee origins in Central America. Boquete coffee in particular is recognised internationally for its complexity and floral acidity.
The Volcán Barú National Park context
The highlands are partly within Volcán Barú National Park and partly in private coffee-farm holdings and Indigenous Ngäbe-Buglé comarca land to the west. The 2016 MiAmbiente public-use plan regulates access to the park and the Barú summit[2], but much of the highland region outside the park boundary is privately owned.
Conservation attention in the highlands is concentrated on three issues:
- Cloud-forest protection. The cloud-forest belt at 1,500–2,500 m is biologically the richest habitat zone in Panama and the most threatened by agricultural expansion. Most of the highland cloud forest outside the park boundary has been cleared for coffee or pasture.
- Watershed protection. The upper Chagres basin (which drains much of the eastern highlands) supplies Lake Gatún and the Panama Canal’s lock system. ACP’s watershed-protection programme buys and reforests land in the upper basin.
- Indigenous land rights. The western Chiriquí highlands overlap with the Ngäbe-Buglé comarca, the largest Indigenous comarca in Panama. Land-use disputes between coffee farmers and Ngäbe communities have been an ongoing source of conflict.
Birding, natural history, and research
The Chiriquí highlands are one of Panama’s premier birding destinations. The Sendero de los Quetzales and the upper Barú road are the classic birding routes; the western Volcán/Las Lagunas area is the best place in Panama for yellow-thighed finch and the long-tailed sylph hummingbird. STRI maintains a research presence at the high-elevation cloud-forest sites, and the Agua Salud research programme (located near the Barú foothills) provides 20-year records of reforestation success and carbon-sequestration rates in the highland zone.

The coffee story in detail
Panama’s highland coffee industry is small by global standards (total annual production is roughly 100,000–150,000 bags of 60 kg each, a tiny fraction of Colombia’s or Brazil’s output) but is one of the highest-quality specialty-coffee origins in Central America. The story has several distinct layers:
- Geisha (Gesha) origin. The Geisha variety was first planted in Panama in the 1960s as a research curiosity at the Don Pachi farm in Boquete, and largely ignored until the Peterson family of Hacienda La Esmeralda won the 2004 Best of Panama competition with a Geisha lot that broke the specialty-coffee price record at auction. Since then, Geisha has become the dominant luxury variety from the Chiriquí highlands, with top lots selling for thousands of dollars per pound at auction.
- Volcanic terroir. The ash-rich soils of the Barú flanks give the region’s coffee a particular minerality and complexity. The same terroir that supports high-altitude Arabica also produces the bajareque mists that sustain the coffee trees through the dry season.
- Producer cooperatives. The highlands host multiple producer associations, the most prominent being the Specialty Coffee Association of Panama (SCAP), which runs the annual Best of Panama competition and coordinates international promotion. Small-holder farms (less than 5 hectares) still produce most of the region’s coffee, alongside the larger estates that have come to dominate the Geisha market.
- Labour and migration. Coffee harvest in the Chiriquí highlands relies heavily on seasonal labour from the Ngäbe-Buglé comarca and from Nicaraguan and Costa Rican migrants. Labour conditions, housing, and migrant-worker rights have been ongoing issues for the industry.
The annual Best of Panama competition and the subsequent international auction are the centrepiece of the industry’s commercial calendar, with the Geisha lots attracting buyers from Japan, Taiwan, the US, the Gulf states, and Europe.
