Two oceans, and why they are not the same
The single most important thing to understand about Panama’s marine life is that the country sits on a narrow isthmus between two oceans that are biologically very different, and that the Pacific side, not the Caribbean, is where the abundance is concentrated. The Caribbean coast of Panama is comparatively short, relatively sheltered, and biologically part of the wider Caribbean reef province; its waters are warm, clear, and low in nutrients, which suits coral reefs but limits the overall productivity. The Pacific coast is longer, more convoluted, and bathed in cold, nutrient-rich water driven by upwelling, and that difference in productivity is the reason the Pacific shore carries almost all of the country’s megafauna (the whales, the big sharks, the manta rays, the large pelagic fish).
The reason those two faunas are separate at all is geological. The Central American isthmus finished closing a few million years ago, and before it did, a seaway connected the Pacific and the Caribbean across what is now the land bridge[10]. The slow closure of that seaway separated what had been a single marine fauna into two, an event sometimes called the Great American Schism, and the Caribbean, once it was cut off from the Pacific, became the lower-nutrient, lower-productivity sea it is today[10]. The practical consequence for a modern visitor is that the two coasts are not interchangeable: the Caribbean offers reefs and clear water, and the Pacific offers the whales, the sharks, and the cold-water productivity that supports them.
The Pacific productivity, and where it comes from
The Pacific side of Panama is unusually productive for a tropical coast, and the reason is upwelling: the phenomenon in which cold, nutrient-rich deep water is drawn to the surface, fertilising the food chain from the bottom up. In Panama’s case the upwelling is driven in part by the influence of the Peru Current (the cold Humboldt Current that flows north along South America’s Pacific coast) and by the seasonal wind patterns of the eastern tropical Pacific, which push surface water away from the coast and pull nutrient-laden deep water up to replace it. The result is a tropical coast that behaves, biologically, more like a temperate sea during the productive season: phytoplankton blooms, the food chain lengthens, and the large animals that depend on dense concentrations of prey (the baleen whales, the big filter-feeding fish, the apex sharks) find the forage they need to gather, breed, and feed their young.
The geographical heart of that Pacific productivity is the Gulf of Chiriquí, the large, sheltered embayment on Panama’s western Pacific coast. The gulf’s warm, protected waters are the country’s best-known humpback whale calving ground: humpbacks migrate to the warm waters of the Gulf of Chiriquí and many give birth there, with a season that runs broadly from May into November[3]. That calving concentration is the reason the gulf has become one of Panama’s signature wildlife destinations, and it is the same body of warm, sheltered, productive water that supports the reef and mangrove habitats around its islands, most notably Coiba, the large island at the southern edge of the gulf whose surrounding waters carry some of the richest marine life in the eastern tropical Pacific.
The megafauna
Panama’s Pacific waters are defined, in the popular imagination and in reality, by their large animals. The flagship species is the humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae), a large baleen whale that migrates seasonally between polar feeding grounds and tropical breeding grounds[2]. Panama is unusual among whale-watching destinations in that animals from both hemispheres use its waters: Southern Hemisphere animals travel north from Antarctic feeding grounds to breed in Panama’s Pacific during the boreal summer, and a Northern Hemisphere stock, the Central America distinct population segment, is also present[2]. The same productive Pacific waters that draw the whales carry the other megafauna for which Panama is known. Whale sharks (the largest living fish, a filter-feeding shark that reaches many metres in length) and the giant oceanic manta ray are among the endangered large pelagic species documented in Panama’s protected waters[4]. Several species of sea turtle nest on Panama’s Pacific beaches and forage in its coastal waters, and dolphins, including both coastal and oceanic species, are a routine sight in the Gulf of Chiriquí and around Coiba. None of these animals are unique to Panama; what is unusual is their concentration in a relatively small, accessible, and now substantially protected stretch of the eastern tropical Pacific. A visitor travelling to the Coiba area during the humpback season has a realistic chance of seeing whales, dolphins, and large rays in a single trip, which is a combination few tropical destinations can offer.
Reefs and mangroves
Two coastal habitats underpin the rest of Panama’s marine life, and the country has both in significant quantity. Coral reefs fringe parts of both coasts, but they are very different on the two shores. The Pacific reefs, by contrast, are shaped by the cold, fluctuating, upwelling-driven conditions of the Gulf of Chiriquí and around Coiba, and they support a different, more tropical-eastern-Pacific community. Mangroves line both coasts as well, most extensively inside the same bays and lagoons that carry the country’s Ramsar wetland designations, and globally the mangrove biome is built from around 70 true mangrove species across some 20 genera and 16 families, all of them independently evolved to live in salt water[8]. The reason both habitats matter to the megafauna is that they are the foundation of the food chain. Mangrove root systems are nursery habitat for the juvenile fish and invertebrates that feed the larger predators; reefs provide both food and structural shelter for the reef fish community; and the productivity of the nearshore Pacific (fertilised by upwelling and sheltered by the mangrove-lined bays) is what concentrates the prey that draws the whales, the whale sharks, and the big pelagic fish inshore where people can see them. The sharks
Sharks deserve a section of their own because they are both a defining feature of Panama’s marine life and one of its most serious conservation concerns. The country’s Pacific waters host a substantial shark fauna, from the reef and coastal sharks of the Gulf of Chiriquí to the large oceanic species of the open eastern tropical Pacific. Several of those oceanic species are now under serious global threat: the scalloped hammerhead, the great hammerhead, and the oceanic whitetip are all classified as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List. The reason sharks matter so much to the wider marine-life picture is ecological. As apex and near-apex predators they structure the communities beneath them, and a productive tropical coast that loses its sharks is a coast whose entire fish community reorganises around the loss. That is why the steep declines of the hammerheads and the oceanic whitetip are not just a species-by-species concern but a system-level one, and why Panama’s protection of shark habitat, through the same Banco Volcán and Coiba frameworks described below, is the most consequential thing the country is doing for the broader health of its Pacific waters.
The protected-area estate
What ties all of the above together is that Panama has, over the last decade, built one of the larger marine protected-area estates of any country in the region. The flagship is Coiba National Park, which protects Coiba Island and a Special Zone of Marine Protection in the surrounding waters, and which is inscribed as a World Heritage site; the IUCN World Heritage Outlook assesses its current conservation outlook as Significant Concern, with the main threats identified as unregulated fishing, bycatch of threatened species, tourism development, and climate change, particularly on the reefs[6]. Beyond Coiba, Panama has built a second, larger oceanic protected area that is less visible but arguably more consequential for the open-water megafauna. The Área de Recursos Manejados Banco Volcán was first created in 2015, with the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute leading the scientific design of both of Panama’s first two oceanic protected areas, Banco Volcán in the Caribbean and the Cordillera de Coiba in the Pacific[5]. The 2021 Cordillera de Coiba expansion brought Panama’s total marine protected areas to 98,228 km², and a 2023 decree granted Banco Volcán roughly 93,390 km² of additional protection, an expansion that Mission Blue documented as covering more than 90,000 km² and hosting around 120 pelagic fish species (including the three Critically Endangered sharks, the whale shark, and the giant oceanic manta ray)[4][5]. Taken together, those expansions brought Panama past 54 percent of its ocean under protection, making it the first country in Latin America to exceed the 50 percent mark[4]. The result is a protected-area network that spans both coasts and both the nearshore and the open ocean, and that gives the country’s marine megafauna (the whales, the sharks, the manta rays, the sea turtles) far more protected water than a country of Panama’s size would usually command.
Why Panama’s marine life is unusual, and what to take away
The thing that makes Panama’s marine life worth a dedicated page, rather than a footnote on a coastal-geography page, is the combination: two genuinely different oceans on a single narrow country, a Pacific shore whose cold upwelling feeds a whale-and-shark abundance that no purely tropical coast should sustain, a Caribbean shore whose reefs carry a deep-time ecological record, and a protected-area estate that is large by global standards and still growing. The practical consequence is that a visitor who knows where to look can see humpback whales calving in the Gulf of Chiriquí, dive among sharks and manta rays around Coiba, watch sea turtles nest on Pacific beaches, and snorkel Caribbean reefs off Bocas del Toro, all within a country small enough to drive across in a day.
The conservation frame to carry, when reading the rest of this site’s marine coverage, is that the abundance is real but not automatic.
